EVENT 5 – 2010 pre-view
THE “GOODS” in Tahiti
This season I have been comparing the similarities in the Hobgood’s careers…
Both brothers have laid down almost identical careers stats, average heat scores, average season event results, average heat win ratios, and even very similar event results at each of the Dream Tour Locations.
With both brothers surfing in over 100 events each and winning 4 event titles each, the only obvious difference is C.J. has a world title to his mantle… Both have surfed in over 50 final series heats each with Damien having been to 10 finals to win his 4 events and C.J. has been to 7 finals for his 4 wins.
I have been listing the twin’s careers at each venue and working out their average points earned from each of those venues over the course of their careers. Just to see how they compare against each other. I can’t think of any other way to work out who is the Best Good, not that you need to know that, but I do… I can’t even tell them apart when I am with them… So below is the comparison so far in the first 5 events of 2010…

THE TWO10 SEASON IS NOW HEADING TO EVENT FIVE IN TAHITI C.J is a one time winner at Teahupoo, and a two time runner up; he has a third and three fifth placings… C.J competed in the very first event in (99) and is one of only three surfers to compete in all 11 events held here. He has been in the final 16 in 10 of his 11 events and made 7 final series, both are records for the venue… He has surfed in more final series heats than anybody else (14). Only C.J. and Kelly Slater have been to the final heat three times… He holds the third and sixth highest scores ever posted at Teahupoo (19.84 & 19.70), both were in 2004 when he won the event. Damien has been a one time winner and a one time runner-up with 2 x 5th and 3 x 9th in 9 starts Damo has had 7 top 16 finishes and only missed out in his first two start here. Damien’s highest ever heat total was posted in Tahiti, 2005 quarter final win with a 19.93. Damo lost the final to Slater in 2005 when he popped his shoulder. Slater posted a 20 point heat. The “Goods” record in Tahiti is brilliant, and again similar… It is statistically both their best events of the first 5 locations. Running List of Average Points from each venue including the 2010 results in completed events; The average points in these comparisons are based on the old points system of 732 pts for a 5th, 600 points for a 9th, 410 points for a 17th etc. Damien is leading at 3 of the venues and C.J is leading at 1 venue. They have identical results at 1 venue, on the Gold Coast. There is only 1 point difference in favor of Damien in Brazil. Gold Coast; C.J 524 ave points (best 2 x 5th) … Damo 524 ave points (best 2 x 5th) IDENTICAL Bells Beach; Damo 487 (best 2 x 5th) … C.J 473 (best 1 x 3rd .. 2 x 5th) 14 POINTS DIF’ Brazil; Damo 589 (best 1 x 1st .. 1 x 2nd) … C.J 588 (best 2 x 3rd .. 2 x 5th) 1 POINT DIF’ J-Bay; Damo 595 (best 1 x 2nd .. 1 x 3rd .. 1 x 5th) … C.J 449 (best 2 x 5th) 146 POINT DIF’ Tahiti; C.J 760 (best 1 x 1st .. 2 x 2nd .. 1 x 3rd .. 2 x 5th) .. Damo 681 (best 1 x 1st .. 1 x 2nd .. 2 x 5th) 79 POINT DIF’ Damien also leads the overall event points with an average 575 points per event for the first 5 venues. C.Js average over the first 5 events is 558 points Scorecard after first 5 events; Damo 3 1/2 .. C.J. 1 1/2 NOTE: If Damien was to win the event in Tahiti in 2010, C.J would have to finish 17th or worse for Damien to take the lead in the Bro-off in Tahiti. Good luck to you both, hope it’s big… Aloha Mike Newman RAS Surfing Stats -
