Top 8 from last year we’ll have a R2 birth in all events that may use the new format. The other 8 surfers in that round will come from the current seeding, except for this very next event at Bells, as the Top 16 retains their seeding for the first 2 events of the year.

So, for Tahiti, for example, someone like, let’s say, Damien Hobgood, that was #22 seed (and therefore out of the R2) and is current #17 seed going into Bells, if he gets another good result at Bells most likely he will be inside the next 8 (after the Top 8 from last year) to be part of the Top 16 that will make R2 up for the Billabong Pro. The other side of the coin is a surfer that was inside the Top 16 (#9 to #16) but with not so good results at the Goldie and Bells drops to seed #30, for example. This competitor will be on R1 as he would lost his previous Top 16 seed position.

So once again, for Bells, the Top 16 for the pre-seeded R2 will be the same Top 16 from last year’s ratings. After that, Top 8 will be always in that R2, the other 8 coming from the current seeding.

Another detail to pay attention is that the Top 8, although they will keep their R2 birth, they will also change seeding within that R2. If #1, #2, #3 seeds (for example), accumulate bad results, they may drop as low as seed #16 in that R2. They won’t drop out of the R2, but, again, they will move in accordance to their new seeding within that round 2.
