6 World Champions have been crowned in the 7 years since 2003, with Joel having a bit of a hold on this years title after a perfect start.

In 2006 Slater won the first two events of the season and stayed in the number one position for the whole season.

In 2007 Fanning won the first event of the season and held down the number one position for the whole season.

In 2008 Slater won the first two events of the season again and held down the number one position for the whole season.

But in 2003, 2004, and 2005 the number one position changed hands several times.

This year in 2009 Joel Parkinson has won the first two events of the season and is in the number 1 position, will it be the fourth time a surfer has been number one from start to finish?.

After Parko had rang the iconic Trophy Bells he grabbed from event number 2 of 2009, he holds a very handy lead of 792 points over 2nd positioned Mick Fanning and 924 points ahead of Freddy P and Jordy in 3rd position. He is 936 points ahead of the Floridian Flier Ceej who has positioned himself in 5th place with a pair of 5th from event 1 & 2…

Joel’s current lead is the biggest lead after 2 events in the two wave era. When Kelly won the first two events in 2006 he lead Taj by 768 points, and in 2008 when Kelly won the first two he lead Fanning by 636 points.

Good start for you guys though. Get on a roll with Tahiti and then France, Mundaka, the Search and Pipe to finish. Good last leg for goofy-footers. I WANT A RACE

Surfing does not begin and end by the calendar.

    It goes on forever.

And who totally killed it at Sunset Beach, winning the the most coveted contest of them all? The freaking World Cup at Sunset Beach?

    C.J. Hobgood.

    Build on it.

It is yours for the taking!

I’d like to see Damo get it, then we’d have a new stat: first world champ brothers?

  • Joao Says:

    Those damned australians…

Parko doesn’t have what it takes. And he only won because the ASP judges…well you know the story.

Hopefuly Kelly will clinch the 10th. If not then hopefuly some other guy win’s it because this first two events are making me SICK.

i really question some of u guys who post on here if u even understand what good surfing is. the judges didnt give parko those 2 wins he went out there and took it and out surfed everybody else. there is not one guy on tour that would think that parko didnt deserve to win the first 2 contests. the rest of the guys on tour are just going to have to buckle down and step it up. quit pointing fingers at the judges
