Come on. A title is a title. Who would rather finish second a bunch? If anyone says brides maid they have some problems. Look at Rob Machado. He’s miserable.
world title for sure. and i dont think there should be asterisks everybody else had the same opportunity to win that world title and they didnt get it done regardless of circumstances.
World Title. It’s all about being the top ranked guy at the end of the year. That year ended early due to uncontrollable circumstances.
Top three in 2001 after 5 events. All goofies!!
1 Hobgood,C.J. USA 3094
2 Occhilupo,Mark Aus 2816
3 Lopez,Cory USA 2780
Do you think Occy would have an asterisk if he came on top that year? Probably not as he already won a title a few years before.
CJ, I hope you kill it the rest of the year and are within striking distance going into Pipe. I don’t think Parko’s gonna run away with it. Good luck in Brazil!
Hey ceej, I was watching the “Deep South” video on Surfline and saw you and Watters riding a smaller looking Mayhem Shape. What’s your take on that board???
runner up! rob and taj, despite their lack of titles, still have a great deal of respect, fame, and privilege in the surfing community. nobody will forget those guys. and i think its a stretch to say that CJ’s world title or his surfing will be forgotten.
Is this really even a question? If you’re competing, you probably have a competitive drive, a desire to make your “mark” in the world. Sure people look at guys like Rob Machado, Kong/Elko/Gary Elkerton, Cheyne Horan, and Taj Burrow with respect, but there is an element of pity mixed in there. Right or wrong, that’s human nature.
Seriously, how many people know that Gerlach was ranked #2 in the world in 1989? Contrast that with how many people know that Martin Potter won a world title (in 1989).
Machado might karate chop a couple of fishcuits in his garage and Taj may go on sex tours to reaffirm their masculinity, but they never got juiced. Respect. (stay clean ceej)
Hey CJ that’s a good point! Well I think being the word champ is unreal no matter what but hey we definately can’t forget Taj and Rob. They are f*** good. Hope you are enjoing Praia do Rosa, this place is magic. Good luck in Brazil!!!
hello there;
I think the way you won your title is a bit frustrating, i’m quite sure you feel some how that you didn’t had the time to prove yourself. It is a bit questionable but, i think what you’ve proven so far since your title is this:
2002 – 15th
2003 – 19th (only 6 events)
2004 – 4th
2005 – 10th
2006 – 16th
2007 – 11th
2008 – 5th
So, for sure, you’ve never had a big fall on the ranking, only big “step ups”, if it is a matter of value and proof of a men i think your on the way, but greater than that is how you want to be remembered, and you had not shown us (fans) yet what you want us to remember… we do not want to remember your rankings, we want to remember your skills. keep on building it.
Good luck
that’s a really good one. I’d say a bunch of runner-ups for sure. I mean, look at Taj or Rob, they will never be forgotten. But on the other side, it’s not because of the titles they didn’t get that they will not be forgotten. I think we should see case to case, so we can be fair enough. Nevertheless, c.J surfs great and he is the best goofy on tour
As years go by nobody remembers the runner up. Winner will always show up on the all-time list. I’m trying to figure the asterisk reference. Not many can say they were the champ, especially with someone slurping down 9 titles.
cumon man if osama did his thing in january, you would not even be a first loser i love your surfing anyway, the christian thing is kindof creepy though!
Do you really even have to ask this question? You control your destiny; you are what you become. Your character becomes your legacy as time moves on. Both you and your brother are better than where you are at.
Ceej, your title does not have an asterisk. Everyone wanted it and everyone had the same chance as you, but you took it.
Slater wasn’t there? So what! He wasn’t there for Occy’s or Sunny’s either, but nobody questions those. Curren wasn’t there for Potters…..
To answer the question, anyone in their right mind would take the title, no matter if they won it at one contest that was held at Typhoon Lagoon on New Years Day!
1 Title is greater than a history of 2nds. I couldn’t imagine any professional competitor disagreeing with that.
I don’t know who invented that asterisk on yours, but it’s definitely bogus. The playing field was level, and you were the best on it that year. As with any sport, circumstances outside of the events (like another competitor’s personal choices, or injuries, or 9/11) are all a part of the game – as equally as circumstances that determine who the bomb wave comes to, or who chooses to paddle for it.
It’s natural for the majority of people to not be individual thinkers, so the media’s asterisk kinda screwed you there. An asterisk that I think was an unfortunate consequence of a very small, clique-y surf media. You ain’t gonna see a star next to Federer’s 15th major because Rafa wasn’t there or a rain delay ruined a match for so-and-so. All part of the game, and all understood by tennis’ much broader (therefore less biased) media. In reality, 2001 is 100% yours.
What’s important is how you feel about your surfing now. That also hooks into your relationship with God. The long term effort to be the best or your best relies on motivation. Sure, a bridesmaid is going to feel as if they lost a heat in the dying rounds, while an asterisk is going to feel as if the heat was called early. Neither seems quite right and fair. In 2001, a tragedy overshadowed the international spectacle of competition. 6 events and you came out with the most points. That is still a winner based on those rules. The perspective here is that many people surf since it is relatively easy to get in the water and ride. A significant smaller percentage ride well enough to garner attention. A mere 45 are called the best and have 10 chances (this year) to have bragging rights to #1. We like watching your career and enjoy your personality. Take care and God bless, Ken

June 29th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Out of the Loop – CJ won the title the in 2001 and the ASP cut the tour short due to the 9/11 ordeal.

People remember great surfers title or not. ie Kong, Taylor Knox. Titles help.
