after all that I’ve seen and heard, I would of gave an interference to Damien for paddling in the way of dean and Dean an interference for pulling the leash?..

    double just my 2 cents

  • ceej Says:

ok, now it’s time for everybody to start ragging on me for sounding like a complete doucher… ewwwww!

  • trav Says:

completely agree on the double. but the judges were too scared to make a call. makes them look bad and surfing for allowing something like that to go unpunished

  • In the know Says:

For sure Ceej….to wrongs don’t make a right.

Both at fault, both interfere with eachother, both lose half score of second ride, damo advances.

Problem solved. Black and White. No more grey areas.

  • RYMB Says:

Hmmm. Didn’t like my comment about Hatchett and Carr, eh? Ok, well, you, Damo and Dingo are still on the North Shore right? Then if the ASP doesn’t have the spine or whatever to deal with it, then why don’t you and your brother go and see Dingo and sort it out and be done with it. He can’t be hard to find. And I don’t mean get into fisticuffs with him. I mean talk it through until there’s a resolution. Then we can all get back to our Xmas shopping.

  • Bonesy Says:

It was definitely an intense heat, and if there was some sentiment of “two wrongs” amongst the judges, you would think to help advance the sport, they would penalize the leash pulling.

Accidental leash pulling can happen, but reading about Dingo’s dirty past, I am less sympathetic. I think in that moment, he went with his instincts and was obviously embarrased afterwards about it.

  • ceej Says:

@ In the know exactly right!

    end of story…

  • ceej Says:

@RYMB we’ll your Christmas shopping should be done then, the night the comp finished everyone had a birthday party at lies lies for Freddy P and Bede’s lady, everyone got pissed and had a huge laugh about it, no love lost.

This whole debate was simply to push the judges to be more accountable because there’s alot of fans at home that want answers or they feel cheated. I’m a huge fan of surfing just like you.

    peace

    c

  • Poopmouth Says:

said it one and i say it again ,,,,The question is not whether or not he had priority but whether he could have caught the wave ,,,, & he didn’t ! which would proves to me he cheated. otherwise take off and the get interference.

    What a kook.

  • RYMB Says:

    @Ceej

Good. And we do feel cheated and so should the surfers. But seriously, I think the surfers rep’s should be pushing for more accountability and, frankly, Perry Hatchett has been there long enough where things like this shouldn’t even be an issue, because they were dealt with appropriately at the time. Maybe it’s time to look for another head judge.

So whadya’ getting me for Chrissy? How about a board from Gally or Simon? I’ll hit you up at the Quiky Pro.

  • ceej Says:

yeah, gotta figure out this whole fantasy surfer mess as me damo and gally stunk up fantasy surfer this year sooooo bad.

  • stylecounciler Says:

    Lance Burkhardt is sooo 1980’s.

But Ding-dog as he will now be known… is a leash puller. Woof, woof!

And no one will forget that for another 20 years.

  • Bodhi Says:

Ok, you’ll make it simple for everybody:

If Dingo wanted to call an interference at Damo, he should have just droped into that wave. He couldn’t. Pulled the leash. Mother fucker. End of the story.

Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year for everyone.

  • Tiago Garcia Says:

It’s sad to see that ASP judges the faults accordingly who make them. It’s an ozzie (Perry) covering another (Dingo) .But Im sure that If a brazilian, euro guy or even an american and ozzie without political expression was in Dingo’s place things gonna be different. I’d like to know the name of these judges, all of them and know the one whos trying to save his job defending Dingo and the judge who saw what every sane person saw. Dingo trying to win cheating. Well ASP is losing credits all over the world making no punishments for cheaters.

  • kristina Says:

Okay damon rise above it, as I am sure you have. A leash puller is just someone SUPER JEALOUS of your success. I would take this as a compliment to your surfing, I mean ‘he actually had to pull your leash’ instead of being a man, dropping in the wave and just have interference called on you. He’s weak! you know this!

  • Jus10 Says:

If you watch the video again. Watch Dingo’s arm towards the ends. Either he paddles like a seal right before he catches a wave or he’s digging around underwater. I guess I will cross him off the chalkboard for All Tha Way Live 2 The Reunion….

  • stylecounciler Says:

Ding-dog won’t be banned from surfing the North Shore, but he’ll hear about it for a long, long time.

It will, how we say,… dog him for life.

Ding-dog must like it on the leash.

Get the boy a fire hydrant.

  • Brewster Says:

Oooops! Like someone said, that was a reflex action from DM.

The reflex action of a compulsive CHEAT.

I respect ya surfing Dean but get yr sh1t together bra.

  • stylecounciler Says:

The leash grab has a new name.

It’s now known as the Dog Boy.

    The Dingo.

    Or more descriptively put,..

    The Dean Morrison.

  • Anonymous Says:

It was obvious that Dean made it ON PURPOSE!

I was watching it live. At the time it seemed it wasn’t on purposed, but when I watched on surfline.com and then here on this blog I realized he made it on purpose.

You can see that he tried to grab Damien’s jersey and then grabbed his leash.

Dean had already done the same thing in a heat against the brazilian Andre Silva.

They cannot let this go unpunished!

In any other sport the “athlete” would be punished.

But the ASP is not a serious association. They let everything go.

They didn’t punished Sunny Garcia when he beated Neco Padaratz in the same event some yars ago. I think they just made him pay a fee of $1.000 or something like that. He should be suspended.

My best wishes to the Hobgood’s. You’re trully professional surfers.

  • Jason Says:

I agree with the above anon. poster, Dingo totally did it on purpose. The telling comment from him after all his denials is the quote in Stab where he says “Of course, I wasn’t gonna let him get the wave”

We all know that if it had been real Pipe, Damo would’ve smoked Dingo anyways….

  • Jason Says:

While we’re talking about Stab, how about the discussion they had with Ceej about next year’s tour?

Since you guys work for Globe, maybe you can shed some light on why there is no Fiji again this year. That was always my favorite contest and you guys rip there!

  • EY Says:

Speaking of FS, you guys need to post a photo and short write up of all the gear in your garage for us to pillage. Thanks.

  • ceej Says:

@EY yeah man give me a few days here and i’ll get my act together.

@Jason i know a big thing with the fiji event was fiji telecom as they had to use them to broadcast the event, we’ll we all know how sub par there service was,so Globe had to make desission send up there own satellite $$$, or spend alot of $$$ and put there hands in fiji telecom, so people can just get mad write in how bad the webcast is.sure there are other things but that always frustrated Globe

  • ed Says:

“In any other sport the “athlete” would be punished.”

You saying that Henry wont play 2010 world cup??

oopps.. I accidentally used my hand to control de ball.. I´m sorry Ireland..just keep up the hard work and in 4 years u´ya ve a shot at it..

    shit happens

  • ed Says:

I wonder if Fiji telecom has any conections with Brasil telecom… shitest thing ever!

About the double call, in that case then my cents is that:

If a call was made on Dingo (judges accepting that indeed dingo grabbed the leash) there should follow a “disqualification call” (is there such a thing?)

so, double interference, both lose half of their lowest score. Surfer that pulled the leash gets disqualified for unsportmanship

  • Robert's Your Mother's Brother Says:

    @Ceej

Freddie P’s site has a bit up on this whole drama which you’ve likely seen. Here’s an excerpt of my response, my 2¢ if you like, to what Freddie said. The link to it is below for other readers.

    http://insurfnews.com/?p=1322#comments

Diplomatic but fair call by you Freddie P.

However, Dingo is a notorious hassler and drop-in (he’s not alone) and I think in the heat of the moment his ‘instincts’ took over and he grabbed Hobgood’s leash on purpose. In slow motion replay his (Dingo) last few paddles were only with one arm and showed no signs of someone who was trying to free himself from getting unintentionally tangled in an opponents leash.

Question: Is pulling an opponents leash considered an interference? Or is it Unsportsmanlike conduct which is dealt with in a way that DOES NOT affect the outcome of the heat.

My call is interference on Damien Hobgood and Unsportsmanlike conduct on Dean Morrison. Does that change the outcome of the heat? Only if Unsportsmanlike conduct during a heat is considered an interference.

I believe the situation should have been addressed more clearly and deliberately by the judges. But I also believe the lack of action on behalf of the judges and head judge is symbolic of a judging system and panel that has shown significant flaws and inconsistencies all through the 2009 tour. Because of that, I believe, there has become a credibility issue with the ASP. It’s hard to take an organisation seriously when it consistently has questionable outcomes.

  • Jason Says:

Ceej, thanks for the explanation about Fiji. That’s kind of what I thought. I was on the fantasysurfer message boards during the internet blackouts of the last event held there, and they were raging for sure. such a shame, both for you guys and the entire tour. The concept of “Dream Tour” takes a major hit without Fiji on board.

I still believe that given the alternative of no Fiji, most fans could live with a compromised webcast. I suggested at the time that Globe should have gone public with the technical difficulties right away (maybe even preemptively) and begged for patience. Doing that would have bought allot of good will as I can testify that the majority of fans were frustrated with sitting and waiting with no explanation, while perfect waves were being ridden. From our end it seemed like it was just being sloppily run, and nobody told us any different. Just my thoughts…

    Merry Christmas Ceej!
